Certain vehicles are known for their prowess, both on-road and off-road. Crossovers are some of the most popular vehicles sold these days, and if you’re looking to head into rough terrain with your crossover but don’t know what to get,  here is a list of seven crossovers that will serve your purpose.

Subaru Crosstrek

The Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover—not the sort of vehicle you’d expect to see in an SUV market segment, where several models don’t even have all-wheel drive as an option.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan, a compact crossover that fits a third-row seat, is best known for its huge interior. But it also offers an optional 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and hill-descent control, enabling it to tackle tough off-road terrain.

Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover ready to take on the world. It wears its capability on its sleeve, with aggressive styling and squared-off wheel wells. If you choose the Adventure model or TRD Off-Road, this vehicle is ready for off-road adventures.

Land Rover Discovery

When you’re looking for a luxury off-road crossover, Land Rover is one of the best options. The carmaker has decades of off-road experience, and many models have adopted high-tech technology to tackle off-road terrain. A top example is the mid-size Land Rover Discovery.

Ford Bronco Sport

The Ford Bronco Sport is a boxy, rugged truck-based SUV that looks like the off-road-ready Ford Bronco. Under the skin, the Bronco Sport has the same mechanical bits as the mild Ford Escape crossover.

Jeep Cherokee

The latest Jeep Cherokee is a compact crossover that, like other Jeeps, is ready to go off-road. That’s especially true if you pick its Trailhawk model, which provides a rear locker, a selectable rock mode, all-terrain tires, and off-road suspension.

Nissan Pathfinder

The redesigned Pathfinder is ready to handle any off-road conditions you want to tackle, no matter how big or small. It’s not a rock-crawling champion, but its terrain-mode selector includes snow, sand, and mud/ruts settings. Nissan has also upgraded the crossover’s all-wheel drive system, which they say will help provide more traction when driving on loose surfaces such as sand or mud.
