If you’ve ever traveled, you know how hard it can be to find a good deal on a rental car. Thankfully, there are a few ways to find cheap rental cars at the last minute. Continue reading to find out how to save money on your next trip.
Book Online
When looking to rent a car, online deals are typically the cheapest. If you’re in the store to book, managers know you are likely to accept the price they offer, but online companies are competing for your business, so you should still be able to find a better rate. Generally, prices will increase the nearer you get to the pick-up date, so book as soon as possible to secure the best possible price.
Be Flexible
If it’s too late to get what you’re looking for, consider what might be a good substitute. Could you take an economy car instead of an SUV if only economy cars were available (and save some money)? Some car rental companies prefer drivers aged 25 and up and will refuse or charge more for a younger driver. If this applies to you, check if there’s anyone older who could do the driving in your place.
Change Your Pick-Off and Drop-Off Locations.
If you want to save money on your rental car, try changing the pick-up and drop-off locations. For example, if you plan to start your rental at the office rather than at the airport, many companies will charge less. Also, be aware that some companies may charge extra if you return the car to a different location than where it was collected. If this is your plan, check whether you can return it to its original location instead.
Minimize Extra Costs
Renting a car at the last minute can be pricier, so try to keep other additional costs to a minimum. Choose a rental car with a ‘Full to Full’ fuel policy, meaning that you won’t be charged for re-fuelling if you fill up just before returning the car. Resist adding other extras like GPS Navigation. Use your phone or go old-school with a paper map.
